The University of Nottingham has won a contract from the Higher Education Funding Council and the College of Policing to deliver a two year project to 13 police forces and Police and Crime Commissioners across the country to help improve policing strategy and tactics and community safety.

The project is part of the work of the ‘Better Policing Collaborative‘(BPC) led by the Centre for Health and Justice at the University’s Institute of Mental Health. The BPC works with Police Forces and Police and Crime Commissioners to build sustained capability to understand, critique and use research evidence to improve public safety and resource use. This new funding will accelerate the understanding of crime and policing issues, and evidence based policing.

The BPC is led by The University of Nottingham and is a consortium of Universities; Birmingham, Derby, Liverpool, Manchester Business School, University Campus Suffolk with Skills for Justice the national sector skills council and Crest Analytics our commercial partner.

The College of Policing, HEFCE and the Home Office launched the £10m Police Knowledge Fund earlier this year to encourage collaboration between academia and police forces in order to increase evidence based knowledge, skills and problem solving approaches within policing.

Nottingham will be providing expertise in areas such as mental health, safety, risk and harm reduction, child sexual exploitation, cybercrime and domestic abuse.

Speaking about the project, Professor Eddie Kane from the Centre for Health and Justice in the Institute of Mental Health at The University of Nottingham, who leads the BPC said: “There are a number of big issues being faced by police forces in the UK. I am looking forward to working with colleagues not only across our university but everyone in our consortium and the Forces and Police and Crime Commissioners. I am confident that the Better Policing Collaborative will help us to find innovative solutions to some of the major problems being faced by the UK police today.”

Nationally the Police Knowledge fund is £10m, and the value of the Better Policing Collaboration fund secured by the Nottingham led consortium is £1.1m.

Dr George Baxter, Director of Business Engagement and Innovation Services at The University of Nottingham, added: “Winning such a high-profile national project and leading the Better Policing Collaborative is a great honour for the University. We have a tremendous wealth of expertise across the criminal justice spectrum and I hope that this is just the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the College of Policing.”
