The Malaysian Government has awarded The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) a 5* rating for the quality of its research and innovation, making it the highest rated international university in Malaysia.

The Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA), measures the quality of research, development, commercialisation and innovation conducted by Malaysian universities. The 5* ranking was announced at a ceremony officiated by Dato’ Seri Haji Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education.

Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC, said: “This is a magnificent achievement and recognition that we are delivering high quality research and achieving benchmarks equivalent to those of any of the country’s leading universities.”

With 280 academic staff, UNMC’s world-class research portfolio centres on Environmental Sustainability, Islamic Business and Finance, Sustainable Palm Oil and an Asia Aerospace Technology Centre. This is further supported by research groups exploring areas such as drug delivery, green technologies, nanontechnology, climate and pollution, intelligent systems, advanced materials and geomechanics. UNMC’s current research portfolio stands at in excess of RM33m.

UNMC also undertakes research for the business community, utilising MyResearch Sdn Bhd, which is a tax efficient vehicle so that companies can recover two Ringgit for every one Ringgit invested.

In 2015, UNMC setup its first spin out company (Nottingham Green Technologies Sdn Bhd) which has a focus on cleaning up effluent from palm oil mills.

Professor Graham Kendall, Vice-Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said; “This is a fantastic outcome for UNMC and is testament to all the hard work by the staff at the University. I am extremely proud to represent the team of high quality academics and professional services staff that have achieved this in the short time that we have had a presence in Malaysia.”

UNMC was Britain’s first fully-fledged international campus. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year UNMC epitomises the University's commitment to providing an international education experience, while inspiring students and staff to improve the academic and professional communities they belong to worldwide. Set in 125 acres the purpose built campus is now home to 4800 students including international students from 70 countries.
