The University of Nottingham provides its students with teaching of the very highest quality, according to the results of the inaugural Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The TEF panel judged that the University delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It reached the gold standard — the highest quality found in the UK.

The gold award reflects a huge amount of hard work to ensure that students get the best possible experience during their time at Nottingham. This includes excellent teaching and academic support, investment in world-class facilities and access to truly global opportunities.

The award underlines Nottingham’s status as an outstanding teaching and research-intensive university, producing global graduates who are highly sought after by top employers. The gold rating comes on the back of recent data from the national LEO (Longitudinal Educational Outcomes) study which found that our students are among some of the highest earners in the UK and progress in their careers faster than graduates from other universities.

The University’s consistency in graduate employment is one of its key strengths and this, along with its excellent National Student Survey scores and student retention rates, has undoubtedly boosted a strong offering for students.

The TEF panel noted that students at the University achieved “consistently outstanding outcomes”, and that there were high levels of student satisfaction with teaching and academic support.

The Gold award also reflects:

  • systematic evaluation of student feedback
  • the role of students as change agents
  • the level of contact time
  • an embedded culture of personalised learning
  • exceptionally high student engagement with advanced technology-enhanced learning
  • focused, discipline-specific careers support
  • an institutional culture that rewards excellent teaching.

Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that we have received a TEF Gold rating. It reflects the hard work and creativity of our teaching staff and support colleagues across our UK campuses. Every single one of them has contributed to this institutional award, and I want to thank them all.”

Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar, added: “This is a real mark of confidence from HEFCE and the UK government in the quality of our teaching and the support our students receive. From high quality careers advice and guidance to the consistently outstanding outcomes achieved by our students we have been recognised for the quality of support we provide.

“Moreover, through our commitment to developing and using the most innovative learning technologies and high levels of student satisfaction, our institutional culture has been recognised as encouraging and rewarding excellent teaching.”

The TEF award description is as follows:

‘Based on the evidence available, the TEF Panel judged that the University of Nottingham delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK.’
