Shearer West

Update from University Council

Tuesday, 25 June 2024

Dear colleagues,

After seven years as President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nottingham, Professor Shearer West will be stepping down from her position to become the new Vice-Chancellor & President at the University of Leeds in November 2024.

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Norman will become interim from 1 November.

Following the decision to appoint a new Vice-Chancellor in summer 2025, Council, the University’s governing body, has already commenced a process to identify Professor West’s successor for the University of Nottingham.

Council has hugely valued the opportunity to support Shearer in her many successful endeavours, both within the University, the city and across the region. Her contributions will be recognised and appreciated widely.

We will continue to build on the foundations she has laid over the past seven years and on Shearer's vision for a global university that is fit for the future.

We will, I am sure, all congratulate Shearer on her new appointment and wish her every success in this next phase of her career.

Best wishes,

Sir Keith O’Nions, Chair of Council on behalf of Council
