A professor of engineering from the University of Nottingham, and an EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Research fellow, has been elected as a Fellow of ASM international, the world’s largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists.
The honour of Fellow represents recognition of distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society.
Tanvir Hussain, Professor of Coatings and Surface Engineering at the University of Nottingham, was awarded the fellowship “for sustained and significant contribution to the advancement of the fundamental science in cold spray and suspension spraying, and unwavering commitment to the education of students in the materials field."
In 2021, Tanvir and his colleagues set up a Centre of Excellence in Coatings and Surface Engineering with multi-million-pound investment from EPSRC, Innovate UK and direct industry funding.
His career has focused on developing new advanced coating technologies and understanding their processing and properties relationships for cleaner, greener aerospace and power generation.
Tanvir is also the Co-Director of EPSRC Network+ IGNITE to increase diversity in energy research to solve grand challenges facing our community.
In 2015, with Innovate UK funding, he introduced suspension thermal spray where nanomaterials in a slurry can be injected in a supersonic combustion flame to produce coatings with properties never before achieved. His work laid the foundation of the field, and as a result, new groups emerged in Germany, Italy, Finland and India.
To expand this theme, in 2020, he established the UK’s only Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS) facility, which uses nanoparticle suspension to produce a strain-tolerant columnar microstructure.
I am overjoyed to be elected as a Fellow of ASM International--the world’s largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists. I am humbled by the trust and recognition the Board of Trustees bestowed upon me for my contribution to the field.
It means so much to be recognised with fifteen other incredible colleagues in the 2024 Class of Fellows. This recognition has only been possible due to the incredible students, researchers, and technicians who have gone through the research team. I look forward to carrying the flame of thermal spray research internationally and building an inclusive research community.
Many congratulations to Professor Tanvir Hussain on being elected as a Fellow of ASM International. It is a great testament to his work and achievements in the sector. We are delighted his work is being recognised on an international scale."

About the University of Nottingham
Ranked 32 in Europe and 16th in the UK by the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024, the University of Nottingham is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. Studying at the University of Nottingham is a life-changing experience, and we pride ourselves on unlocking the potential of our students. We have a pioneering spirit, expressed in the vision of our founder Sir Jesse Boot, which has seen us lead the way in establishing campuses in China and Malaysia - part of a globally connected network of education, research and industrial engagement.
Nottingham was crowned Sports University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 – the third time it has been given the honour since 2018 – and by the Daily Mail University Guide 2024.
The university is among the best universities in the UK for the strength of our research, positioned seventh for research power in the UK according to REF 2021. The birthplace of discoveries such as MRI and ibuprofen, our innovations transform lives and tackle global problems such as sustainable food supplies, ending modern slavery, developing greener transport, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The university is a major employer and industry partner - locally and globally - and our graduates are the second most targeted by the UK's top employers, according to The Graduate Market in 2022 report by High Fliers Research.
We lead the Universities for Nottingham initiative, in partnership with Nottingham Trent University, a pioneering collaboration between the city’s two world-class institutions to improve levels of prosperity, opportunity, sustainability, health and wellbeing for residents in the city and region we are proud to call home.
