University of Nottingham awarded top national award for Excellence in Student Sport

Friday, 04 December 2020

The University of Nottingham has been named the top university in the UK for student sport by leading higher education sector experts, The College and University Business Officers (CUBO).

The CUBO awards, announced last night, honoured the University with the Excellence in Student Sport award, recognising the institution with a sports experience that draws students in to meet their needs in a fast-moving environment.

Nottingham were applauded for their variety of innovative and inclusive programmes to increase participation in sport as well as offering sector-leading facilities for students to stay active on campus. The University was also commended for the success of their competitive teams, with a record number of league titles, cup medals and individual golds won across the 2018/2019 season.

The award adds to the Times Good University Guide Sporting University of the Year 2021, awarded to the University of Nottingham in September, firmly cementing the institution as the top choice for students looking to combine a global education with pursuing their sporting goals.

The University was also shortlisted for the CUBO Digital Engagement award for the popular Empower campaign, encouraging female students to get active on campus.

We’re absolutely delighted to have been recognised by CUBO for our student sporting offer here at the University of Nottingham.
Dan Tilley, Director of Sport at the University of Nottingham

He added: “2020 has been a challenging time and we’ve had to be very agile and resilient to look at new ways to deliver our core goal of supporting students to stay active and learn through sport. This is a real boost to our staff and volunteers – thank you!”

Josie Jessop, University of Nottingham Students’ Union Sports Officer added: “I’m so proud of everyone involved in delivering sport here at Nottingham; the staff and all the students who volunteer so many hours every week to run our sports clubs and programmes.

“It’s been a really difficult and uncertain year and I think it’s so important for our students to be able to choose from so many options – in person and virtual – to stay active, connected and manage their wellbeing.”

University of Nottingham Sport now looks ahead to next week’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) awards where they are shortlisted in eight different categories including Club and Team of the Year.
