Celebrating World Space Week 2024

Friday, 04 October 2024

Following a number of events for last year's World Space Week, the University of Nottingham has once again decided to mark the event by uniting staff and students in a number of space-related offerings and research.

Drop-in event

This year, there will be a drop-in event in the foyer of the Engineering and Space Learning Centre on the 10th October from 11:00-13:00 for staff and students.

The event will see researchers and students share their stories, along with exhibitions of some rockets, meteorites, and satellites, with a chance to talk to some of our people conducting space research.

Dr Juliana Rinaldi-Semione

Dr Juliana Rinaldi-Semione, Research Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering, explains in the video below why her space-related research is important for the future development of space travel.

Assistant Professor Christopher Sargeant

Assistant Professor Christopher Sargeant, from the School of Law, explains why it is important to look at the changing laws and permissions for space travel.

Young Professional's Satellite launch

Post-graduate students and lecturers from the University of Nottingham have also helped to support the European Space Agency (ESA) during the recent launch of their Young Professional’s Satellite, YPSat, using the monitoring ground station in the heart of University Park campus.

The NottSpace Lab provided ground station support for the mission, with advanced capabilities enabling students to receive signals from the satellite, which was launched onboard the maiden flight of Ariane 6 on 9 July.

Project CRES

The videos below showcase the strides being made by the University of Nottingham in the space sector, including the development of rocket engines in-house, and rocket launches.

The rocket launch saw views from 2.6km above sea level, the University's most powerful rocket launch yet. The team are now aiming to reach an altitude of 13km+, in hopes to break the UK's altitude record for student rocketry.
