The Newton Fund is now a £735 million fund which, through science and innovation partnerships, promotes the economic development and social welfare of partnering countries. It aims to strengthen science and innovation capacity and unlock further funding through which the UK and partner countries will build strong, sustainable and systemic relationships. It is delivered through 15 UK delivery partners in collaboration with the partner countries.
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
is one of seven Research Councils that work together as Research Councils UK (RCUK). BBSRC is funded by the Government's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The council supports around 1600 scientists and 2000 research students in universities and institutes across the UK.
CONFAP (Brazilian National Council for the State Funding Agencies) is a non-profit organization created in 2006 to articulate the interests from Brazilian State Funding Agencies, among other goals. There is a strong partnership with the United Kingdom that has resulted in several public calls. CONFAP was the first Brazilian organization to operate the Newton Fund and has been publicly recognized by its success in implementing the calls.
FAPESP is Sao Paulo State's research foundation. Besides funding research in all fields, the foundation supports large research programs in Biodiversity, Bioenergy, Global Climate Change, and in Neurosciences. FAPESP’s expenditures in 2013 were R$ 1.085 billion (approximately £220 million). FAPESP maintains cooperation agreements with national and international research funding agencies, higher educational and research institutions and business enterprises. The international cooperation covers a broad range of countries and agencies including the UK Research Councils.
FAPEG is Goias State's research foundation. FAPEG supports projects in scientific research, technology developement and inovation. Funding includes fellowships, purchase of research equipments, materials and services, intelectual property registration, publications, participation and promotion of scientific events. FAPEG has established several national and international cooperation agreements, including partnerships with the Newton Fund, the British Council and the UK National Academies.
FAPEMA is Maranhao State's research foundation. FAPEMA is linked to Maranhao State's department of Science, Technology and Higher Education. Its goals are fomenting science and technology in the state, supporting research and mediating the transformation of scientific knowledge into tools able to reduce social and economic differences. FAPEMA has developed collaboration agreements with the Newton Fund and the UK National Academies, among other UK research institutions.
