Electronic Information Sources in the Health Sciences
Learning Outcomes
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Gain an overview of the major databases available in the health sciences
- Compare available resources, eg Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science
- Identify the range of electronic journals available
- Use Internet Gateways to find good quality web sites,eg OMNI, NMAP
- Practice using a variety of sources
Who should attend
Staff interested in undertaking research in the areas
of medicine, nursing or health sciences
Pre-requisites: Some experience of using databases such as Medline, CINAHL,
Web of Science would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Electronic Information Sources in Evidence Based Medicine
Learning Outcomes
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Gain an appreciation of the differences between sources of Evidence
Based Literature and more established medical databases
- Learn the techniques for searching for Randomised Controlled Trials,
Protocols and Clinical Trials
- Compare available resources eg The Cochrane Database of Systematic
Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, Medline
- Highlight
useful websites, eg NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, NICE
and ScHARR
- Practice using a variety of sources
Who should attend
Staff interested in searching for Evidence Based Literature
in Medicine
Pre-requisites: Some experience of using databases such as Medline, CINAHL,
Web of Science would be an advantage, but is not essential.

of Information in Medicine for Medical Secretaries
Learning Outcomes
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Gain an overview of the major databases in medicine
- Learn how to search medical databases to verify references
- Practice using a variety of web resources
Who should attend
Secretaries required to check and verify references
on behalf of departmental staff.
Pre-requisites: Some experience of using the World Wide Web would be
an advantage, but is not essential.
