SONET has submitted an entry for the "e-Tutor of the Year 2004" competition, run jointly by the Higher Education Academy (formerly the LTSN) and the Times Higher Education Supplement. The title of the submission is "Reusable learning Objects & WebCT to Enhance a Nurse prescribing course (ROWEN) " and focusses on the use of RLOs on the September 2003 intake of post-registration students on the Nurse Prescribing course.
The submission is based on analysis of student's views, gathered by questionnaire at the start and at the end of the course, on how well or badly they understood the core concepts in pharmacology. Understanding of concepts illustrated by RLOs, such as "Half-life of Drugs" and "First-pass Metabolism", showed a significantly greater increase than understanding of concepts not dealt with by RLOs, which suggests that RLOs helped students gain understanding of these concepts. Anecdotal reports from students seem to confirm this.
