The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has today published the provisional national A level results for 2024. A significant headline from the data is the milestone of 100,000+ entries to A level Mathematics being reached in the UK for the first time (107,427).
To mark the occasion, the Observatory for Mathematical Education has created a short animation. This illustrates the top 20 A level subjects by entries in the UK from 2003 to 2024 using JCQ data, except for the Covid years of 2020 and 2021 when examinations were cancelled.
What trends do you observe over the last 20 years?
Observatory activity related to post-16 and transition to university
In the coming years, students included in these JCQ provisional 2024 results will be contained within the Observatory for Mathematical Education’s extensive trend analysis work.
The Observatory also has an ambitious longitudinal Cohort Study strand of activity, incorporating primary, secondary/post-16, and higher education. This will encompass tens of thousands of students and thousands of teachers, across a period of seven years starting in 2024/25.
