Our exhibition

The University Memorial Chapel, University of Glasgow
1 to 11 February 2013

Between 1 and 11 February 2013 the exhibition was shown at the Memorial Chapel, University of Glasgow, to accompany the public conference 'A Long Way from Home: The Baltic People in the United Kingdom'.

Professor Richard Berry, Director of the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies, University of Glasgow, opened the exhibition and conference.

Among those in attendance at the opening were the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia H.U. Aino Lepik von Wiren, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia H.E. Mr Eduards Stiprais, the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr Michael J. Dean, the Estonian Honorary Consul Iain Lawson, the FIrst Secretary of the Latvian Embassy, the Press Attaché of the Estonian Embassy and the Councillor (Diaspora Issues) of the Lithuanian Embassy.

The German Honorary Consul wrote afterwards: ‘This is such a valuable exhibition giving a better insight into the tragedy of the war and all the consequences, both on a grant almost unimaginable scale, and for the individuals and families, the sadness, the longing ....’

A former ‘Balt Cygnet’ was also present (see Briefing Paper No. 6 on the ‘Historical Themes’ page of this website for an explanation of this term), a former relief worker, and several descendants of Baltic Displaced Persons who settled in Scotland after the war.

The exhibition received coverage in the Estonian and Latvian press, in both online and print media.
