Gavers is a PhD candidate with the International Agriculture DTP. His project is titled 'Understanding the mechanism for hypoxia tolerance in rice'. He is supervised by Professor Frederica Theodoulou and Dr Smita Kurup at Rothamsted Research and Dr Darren Wells and Dr Jonathan Atkinson at the University of Nottingham.

Prior to starting a PhD, Gavers was a research assistant for the Wheat Grain Biochemistry and Genetics Group at the University of Adelaide, where he also completed his MSc.
