Editorial Trainee for the British Journal of Dermatology

Another exciting opportunity has arisen for a young dermatologist to join the BJD as an Editorial Trainee for a two year post. The role has been refined with feedback from previous post holders, to maximise its educational and career value. This is a joint initiative between the British Journal of Dermatology and the Centre of Evidence based Dermatology at the University of Nottingham.

This will be a chance to gain inside information on how publishing works and to obtain formal training in the publication process and evidence-based dermatology. The Editorial Trainee will be responsible for reviewing Image Gallery submissions, progressing to Image Gallery Associate Editor in their second year. In addition, the successful candidate will join the BJD Journal Club team, linking with authors to help them produce PowerPoint presentations of their work. They will also enhance their social media skills, contributing to the journal’s social media presence. Publication ethics training will be provided, including attendance at the annual BJD team meeting and training day. Hands-on experience will be gained by visits to the BJD editorial office and those of other journals, as well as a visit to the BJD publisher’s office. Training in research methods, peer review and evidence based dermatology will be provided by the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology.

The two year post is a training, not paid post, but with a stipend of £2,000 per year to cover travel, training costs and courses. Applications are limited to UK dermatology trainees who are within two years of obtaining their CCT, or have obtained their CCT but have not yet been appointed to a substantive post.

The appointment process requires a letter of application with a copy of the applicant’s CV, and letters of support from their educational supervisor and training programme director. Additionally, the application must include a 500 word essay explaining why the candidate has applied and what they hope to gain from the experience. The deadline for applications is Monday 8th January 2018 and a decision on who has been successful will take place within two weeks of the deadline, permitting a start date before the end of January.
