Postgraduate research in CIER

Are you interested in joining a vibrant group of masters students, doctoral students, post-doctoral staff, and professors - all enthusiastic about the study of international education? CIER would offer you a welcoming environment to pursue your own research on this important topic.

By joining our community as a postgraduate researcher you will enjoy personal supervision from two experienced academic supervisors chosen for their interest in your project. At the same time, you will be working closely among other doctoral students in a shared and well-resourced environment. 

The School of Education offers PhD/MPhil available for full-time or part-time study and a Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) available for part-time study.

Research areas

We welcome potential applicants for doctoral and post-doctoral research in any of the following areas:

  • Political, sociological, and historical perspectives on education
    Explore studies of adult, vocational, higher, non/in-formal, and lifelong education in the UK and internationally.
  • Internationalisation and global perspectives on education
    Examine critical perspectives on the internationalisation of education across schools, colleges, and universities, including autonomous education.
  • Comparative education and social movements
    Investigate the role of education in social movements and its comparative aspects globally.
  • Global politics of knowledge and decolonisation
    Study the global politics of knowledge production and the processes of decolonisation in education.
  • Skills development and vocational education
    Research skills development, vocational education and training, and professional education for human development and social justice.
  • Educational policy processes
    Analyse the role of local, national, and international organisations in shaping educational policy.
  • Innovative educational practices and environmental education
    Focus on innovative educational practices, climate change education, cultural heritage, capacity building in vocational education, economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, and teacher education and professional learning.
