Hub for Education for Refugees in Europe (HERE)

About the project

The Hub for Education for Refugees in Europe (HERE) collates, fosters, and disseminates research and knowledge for those interested in the question, "What do we know about the educational provision for and experiences of people from refugee backgrounds who have arrived in Europe since 2015?"

It has three key elements:

  1. The HERE Knowledge Base
This is a curated database of published resources on refugee education from across Europe from academic and non-academic sources, published since 2015, which forms the basis of a new, online, searchable database.
  2. The HERE Network
This aims to bring together key stakeholders with academics and other experts in the field of refugee education through online and offline activities aimed at exchanging knowledge and developing research and practice on refugee education across Europe.
  3. The HERE Website
This will host the HERE database and support networking activity – for example, through the publication of themed blogs and multimedia materials for non-academic audiences such as digital stories, comics and animations, podcasts and more.  The HERE website is currently in development with web designers ME AND YOU CREATE

HERE Conference
22/23 November 2022

The inaugural HERE conference brought together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and third-sector organisations to engage in critical conversations on refugee education.

The conference explored the need to move beyond ensuring basic access to education to building sustainable educational pathways for refugees and displaced people within Europe.

Funding

The project is based at the University of Nottingham, where it is led by Professor Joanna McIntyre. HERE is supported by a Steering Group comprising European experts involved in refugee education.

The project is funded by Open Society Foundations and has been further supported via a University of Nottingham ESRC Impact Accelerator grant.
