World Bank Placement 2021 – Reflections on the World Bank Talk (18 February 2021) by Junelle Ayettey, intern at UNCLC
Have you been thinking about careers after your LLM? Are you wondering what the remote working world is like? An internship with the World Bank is a great starting point!
The University of Nottingham Commercial Law Centre (UNCLC) has a unique placement with the World Bank and (like last year) this year it will take place remotely due to the pandemic. Two successful applicants will work alongside the Insolvency and Debt Resolution team and write a dissertation on pertinent topics on this area of law with Professor Irit Mevorach.
Last year, Margaux Seeuws was selected for the internship. She worked with Nina Mocheva and the rest of the Insolvency and Debt Resolution Team. During the seminar Margaux mentioned that despite the remote experience with the World Bank she felt ‘really involved’ and felt a part of the team. She undertook a variety of interesting work that crossed various jurisdictions such as Africa and Eastern Europe. This truly was an invaluable experience as it also helped in researching and writing the dissertation. This truly was an invaluable experience as it also helped in researching and writing the dissertation. Working at the World Bank aided the research process as many webinars were relevant and the current alongside access to documents within the department.
As was also explained by an insightful talk by Nina Mocheva, Senior Financial Sector Specialist at the Insolvency and Debt Resolution Team, Margaux was an integral part of the team as she drafted insolvency laws, conducted legal research, monitored policy responses to Covid-19 and even participated in conversations with government officials. If you are looking for a hands-on experience with high levels of responsibility this is the internship for you!
Also, if you are looking to sharpen key transferable skills, Margaux also reflected on the skills that helped her on her placement, such as critical thinking, time management, and taking a practical approach to insolvency issues. Notwithstanding this, Nina affirmed Margaux’s proactive attitude to learn and gain the most out of her experience. This undoubtably enriched her three-month placement with the team.
