Description

We are pleased to announce that the first LSP Reading Group session for the 2014-15 academic year will be led by Nicola Thomas, a PhD student from the German department. Nicola will be kicking things off with a session on ‘Landscape & Memory’, a fascinating topic which should resonate nicely with much of the research being undertaken by our group members.

Nicola has kindly provided the below introduction to the topic, and two texts for us to focus on:

My readings focus on the relationship between landscape, history and memory in literature and beyond – specifically looking at examples from a German context, but perhaps also raising questions which might be applicable to other language-areas, literatures or contexts. I’m interested in how we might bring theoretical insights from historians and human geographers to bear on writing about landscape, and/or how literary representations might complicate or contradict those theoretical perspectives.

Readings:

  • Baer, Ulrich, ‘Landscape and Memory’ in Remnants of Song: Trauma and the Experience of Modernity in Charles Baudelaire and Paul Celan (Stanford: Stanford UP, 200), pp. 211-55.
  • Cosgrove, Denis, ‘Landscape and Landschaft’ in GHI Bulletin, 35 (Autumn 2004), pp. 57-71

Readings will be circulated to everyone on the mailing list ahead of the session.

All postgraduate students and staff are welcome to attend.
