Description
Early Modern MedievalismThis afternoon research symposium brings together a number of important scholars from across the UK, all with an interest in the later Middle Ages, the Sixteenth century, and the ways in which medieval and early Modern culture interacted. Critical debates about the relationship between the medieval and early Modern have become increasingly sharp over the last decade, particularly in literary history, and the symposium offers a chance to hear the latest research on this topic. Important questions might be, for example, How did the Reformation destroy, or enable the recovery of, medieval culture? How did ‘Renaissance’ writers deploy medieval texts and figures? What continuities (or transformations) might we see in the life and after-life of medieval literatures and cultures?

Speakers:

  • Professor Greg Walker (Edinburgh)
  • Dr David Matthews (Manchester)
  • Dr Anke Bernau (Manchester)
  • Dr Alex Davis (St. Andrews)

This symposium will be of particular interest to researchers and postgraduate students in Medieval Studies, early Modern Studies, English, History and History of Art.

This is a free event, but spaces are limited, so booking is required.
