Aims

To investigate palliative and end of life care delivery in cancer and non cancer populations across Mid Trent and its impact on patient and families experiences of that palliative care.

  • To undertake an activity analysis of the nature and range of referrals into palliative care and an audit of care in the last four weeks of life for patients across Mid Trent
  • To identify how health care professionals diagnose when an individual requires palliative care (ie. they are not going to get better) and examine how health care professionals raise and discuss this with patients and families
  • To investigate how discussions relating to preferred place of care and death are discussed with patients and families and explore the factors that influence if, when and how these conversations take place
  • To prospectively examine how choice and decision-making in relation to place of care, dying and death changes over time and identify what support and information needs patients and families have as they progress through these stages of care

Methods

Longitudinal interviews, focus groups, audit of case notes.
