Visit to our university campus - Saturday 14th June
Date: Saturday 14th June
Time: 10:15am-12:30pm
Location: Humanities Building, University Park Campus
The Family Discovery Day event will take place on Saturday 14th June. If your application is successful, your school will be invited, along with four other schools. Entry and all activities are free and will take place in the Humanities Building, University Park Campus.
After arriving, families are free to explore each room to take part in the different activities on offer. The activities will be delivered in a 'drop-in' style and have been designed to be accessed by children in KS2. We will be encouraging the whole family to take part in learning together and parents/carers will be responsible for supervising their children at all times.
Light refreshments will be provided. Please encourage families to bring snacks or a packed lunch if they wish.
The Family Discovery Day is free for all families to attend.
A member of our team will deliver a 1-hour aspiration and introduction to university session in your school in early June, which will take place after school. This session is only for families who are attending the visit to the university. The pre-visit will include interactive games and activities about university and future ambitions.
Ideally, this session will take place in a school hall or large classroom. Set up requirements for tables and chairs, will also be emailed to you beforehand.
To encourage as many families as possible to attend the pre-visit, please advertise this date alongside the visit day.
Further Information
The aims and objectives of this programme are:
- To increase awareness and understanding of higher education for parent/carers and their children.
- To engage families in learning new things and enjoying time together as a family.
- To raise aspirations for the future amongst both adults and their children.
Travel arrangements and reimbursements
As a school, you need to organise group transport for your families – usually a coach to travel to and from the university together. It is important that everyone from your school travels together, to ensure the smooth running of the event, and the safety of all visitors.
Please arrive at the Humanities Building, University Park, NG7 2RD for 10:15am and book your travel back to school for 12:30pm.
Unique to this event, you can claim a travel reimbursement of up to 50% of the cost of your transport, after the event. More information about this will be provided to successful schools.
Any further directions and meeting point instructions will be emailed to you before the visit and staff and student ambassadors will be on hand to meet your bus and guide families into the venue.
What is the teachers' role?
- Coordination: We will collaborate with you to organise both the in-school session and the university visit.
- Family Involvement: Your support in encouraging families to participate together is greatly appreciated at both sessions
- Promotion: We will provide materials to help you spread the word about the event, but you will need to select who you advertise to.
- Logistics:
- Either you or another staff member will need to arrange transport for all families attending
- Attendance by a memeber of school staff is required on Saturday 14th June
Who can attend Family Discovery Day?
A maximum of 50 family members from your school can attend the in-school session and the visit to the university. The same families should take part in both events - where possible all families should attend the in-school session.
When we say "families", we mean any parents/carers, younger and older siblings, relatives, etc.
How you select families to attend is up to you. If your school has taken part before, we would encourage new families to participate.
