16-18 Work experience

The Faculty is able to accommodate a small number of ad hoc requests for work experience across Bioscience, Computer Science, Mathematical Sciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, for students over 16.

Please get in touch by completing the Expression of Interest Form.

*We have received a high number of expressions of Interest. Please be aware that we can only accommodate a small number of requests and will be in touch if a placement is available.

In addition the School of Physics provides a work experience week for 21 year 12 students each July. Find out more on the school of physics outreach webpages.

Faculty Y10 Work experience programme

The faculty runs a series of work experience weeks for Year 10 students in July. This year the programme will run during the 15-19 July and 22-26 July 2024.

On this programme students will gain insight into a range of roles and careers within the Faculty of Science. This could range from technician roles within the School of Bioscience, to research groups in the School of Computer Science. You will also get the opportunity to gain an understanding of the different management and professional roles within the Faculty and work alongside colleagues in these areas. Over the week students will meet a range of individuals, complete real tasks and go into working lab spaces. Students will also develop their communication, research and presentation skills.

By the end of the work experience students will recognise the breadth of opportunities working in STEM in a university environment.

Programme structure

The Faculty of Science is comprised of seven’ different departments. This includes the schools of: Bioscience, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematical Science, Physics and Astronomy, Pharmacy and Psychology. Students taking part in the programme will get the opportunity to experience faculty subject areas. Whilst taking part in the experience, students are expected to be taking notes and engaging. They will get time each day along with Friday morning to collate what they have observed. They will be expected to deliver a presentation or report on what they have learnt, this could be based on an individual laboratory session, technique or broadly about their week.

Application process

Applications to the work experience will open in January and will involve completing a short application form. The programme is often oversubscribed and so applications will be reviewed on the following:

  1. Interest in a future career working in science or interest in science subjects.
  2. If participants meet any of the University of Nottingham Widening Participation criteria
  3. If they are local

Applications will be reviewed and offered on a fortnightly basis. So please apply early to be in with the best chance of securing a place.

Applications Open until 28 March 2024
