About the project

Researchers in the Lubrizol Chemical Laboratory

The Sustainable Chemicals Innovations Enabling Net Carbon Emissions (SCIENCE) Prosperity Partnership is a collaboration between the Universities of Nottingham and Warwick and chemical company Lubrizol. The aim is to accelerate the decarbonisation of the speciality chemicals industry and deliver clean economic growth to this crucial and enabling manufacturing sector.

SCIENCE has four following objectives:

  1. Transforming a commodity chemical into a speciality chemical
  2. Polymerisation and functionalisation of responsibly sourced terpenes and other bio-derived raw materials to preparedispersant or surfactant backbones
  3. Commercial scale polymerisation and post polymerisation functionalisation in flow to form conventional dispersantbackbones
  4. Formulation and proof-of-concept fired engine testing

Lubrizol

Lubrizol aims to develop new sustainable additives for the automotive industry, industrial and consumer market products, and has worked with the Universities of Nottingham and Warwick for many years.

"[This] will ultimately lead us to lowering our environmental footprint. This will also help manufacturers we supply have some clarity in their supply chain of chemicals.”

Mark Davies, Senior Director Research & Development, Lubrizol

University of Nottingham

“The new science that this partnership will create will enable smarter processes to reduce the carbon footprint of Lubrizol products in applications as diverse as electrified transportation, personal care products and performance sportswear.”

Professor Peter Licence, University of Nottingham

University of Warwick

“By moving towards photochemistry in environmentally acceptable solvents, we will create a toolkit with the power to transform all aspects of additive synthesis from initial discovery through to chemical manufacturing of high-value molecules.”

Professor David Haddleton, University of Warwick

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

The project is supported by the Engineering and Sciences Research Council Prosperity Partnership, bringing together experts from academia and businesses, to meet the challenge of net zero by 2050.
