School summary pages: their role and how they should fit in
with / replace existing School corporate identity home pages
The current duplication of top level web pages for Schools - the
School summary page and the School's own home page is not comfortable,
particularly for those Schools who have already adopted the web
corporate identity.
- There was a consensus that it makes more sense to keep the School's
own home page since it would fit better with the rest of the School's
web site.
- Merging the two pages was thought to produce too complex a page;
perhaps key features from the Summary page could be provided on
a page immediately off the School's home page.
A critique of the School Summary page raised the following points:
- +ve - the consistency provided, the corporate branding element,
the contacts info and map reference
- -ve - Schools want to choose their own priorities(and therefore
links), too many low visibility links to the School home page,
the University Welcome button
Opinions generally supported the existence and value of corporate
branding, but not necessarily of a particular and compulsory corporate
identity
Some solutions to the School Summary / School home page included:
- Schools to maintain the only School home page, and they must
include links to some centrally provided information (from the
home page or a page just off the home page).
- Schools could use a "corporate strip" at the top and bottom
of their own home page with their own content in between.
- Schools could make their own web sites using images and icons
from a "corporate shared pool". Consideration could be given to
adding Schools’ custom-made graphics to the pool.
Suggested way forward:
- Schools to maintain their own home page (and web site)
- Schools to follow rules about compulsory links / content
- LSS web team to insist on "quality rules" - extent to be discussed,
but starting with compulsory ALT statements in IMG tags, use
of recommended directory structure, etc.
- Central web team to promote Corporate Identity and to provide
templates where requested and training as needed.
WSG are requested to provide guidance on:
- how to perform the necessary policing of any rules
- where is the balance of priorities between supporting School
activities and providing centrally originated information
Web Roles document: brief review and ideas for moving forward
- Some examples of management models that Schools may like to
adopt were requested
- WSG are asked if RS & SH should produce these for the next
WSG?
New support developments:
- Web Handbook - the contents pages of the Web Handbook were well
received, feedback on content was provided - SH to incorporate
this into draft version and to circulate URL of handbook by Christmas
- Training courses - an update of training available (new and
revised courses) was provided
- Web forum web site http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/sedu/webforum
was launched - web co-ordinator's asked please to use the site
as a contact point and discussion area for use amongst them selves,
as well as to give feedback on the resources provided on the site.
