Undergraduate welcome
Welcome to the School of Economics. Here you can find out a bit more about your school and how you can prepare for starting your journey with us.
We are delighted that you have chosen to join us, and we look forward to working with you.
Wherever your interests lie we are sure your studies here will extend them in new directions, as well as helping you to develop your intellectual confidence and maturity.
We hope you enjoy your time at Nottingham. If you are unsure about anything in these early weeks, please ask questions or seek help from Student Services (see the key contacts page).
Registration and university email
Please remember you need to register online before you can access your University of Nottingham email and many of our online resources. Keep an eye out for an email about how to register online and activate your username and password.
Once you have received this, take a look at the economics Moodle page - our hub of useful information related to your course and student experience.
Induction activities
We have put together a Welcome Week timetable (available in early September) for the week commencing 23 September that provides you with a schedule of important events to help you make the transition to university life.
Some of the events are designed to help you understand the structure and organisation of your degree programme and life as an economics student. Others will cover the ins and outs of key university systems that you will use during your studies such as the library, IT systems and our student welfare and pastoral services.
Teaching on your programme will start the week commencing 30 September.
Introductory reading lists
To help aid your transition to university, we have put together a short list of resources and links to introduce you to some of the economic ideas you will be working with during your degree.
These lists are designed to give you an insight into some of the course content and to help you prepare over the summer should you wish to do so.
Please note, it is not compulsory for you to buy any of the books from these lists. Detailed reading lists for each module will be given once teaching begins and these are normally accessible electronically via the university's library system.

Peer mentoring
The school runs a peer mentoring scheme for all year one undergraduate students to help them with the transition from school to university.
Peer mentors are returning School of Economics students who volunteer to support incoming year one students. They can offer guidance based on their very recent experience of starting university.
What can I expect from my peer mentor?
- If you sign up to the peer mentoring scheme, you will be allocated a peer mentor at the start of term
- We will arrange for you and your mentor to make contact, either in person or online
- Your mentor will be able to offer support and assistance with practical issues about your course of study, for example signing up to modules, accessing library resources, attending lectures and tutorials and taking useful notes
How can I sign up to have a peer mentor?
To register your interest in having a mentor, complete the sign-up form.
