We often get asked about making friends at university. The following activities can help you meet others on your course and build connections.

Study buddy scheme

The study buddy scheme is a fantastic way to meet others on your course, as it matches you into groups based on your course, department, year, and modules. We’ll put you in contact with your group and invite you to several events over the first couple of months at university to help you settle in. Look out for an email, or information in your weekly email bulletin with information about how to sign up.

Peer mentoring (undergraduate only)

Our peer mentoring scheme pairs you, and a small group of other new students just like you, with a second or third year student mentor from your subject study area. Your mentor can share their experiences and help you with settling into student life, whether it’s:

  • how to find the library
  • how to get to grips with university study
  • where to get the best coffee on campus

Meeting your mentor

You will be allocated to a mentor and introduced to them in the first weeks.

Look out for an email from the Education and Student Experience (ESE) team or from your peer mentor coordinator with details of who your mentor is and when you will meet with them.

Please fill in the voluntary peer mentee information form if you would like us to try to match you more meaningfully based on your interests.

My peer mentor has been amazing this year. I could go to my peer mentor with any questions and receive a quick response either solving any issues or directing me where to find the answer. My peer mentor has been really kind this year, helping me to enjoy my first year of university.

Postgraduate socials (postgraduate only)

Every year, we plan master’s student pizza socials. These events let Faculty of Arts postgraduates socialise over food and drinks. We promote them through the weekly email bulletins.
