We are often asked to recommend some introductory reference books for new students on our courses. Here are some suggestions which provide a good introduction to the subject areas we teach and to our research interests.
It is not recommended that you buy, or even read, all of these: there is much overlap in the material they cover and some of them are quite expensive. However, reading through a well-chosen few should give you some useful background material. You should also be able to access these books from our libraries when you arrive.
Work psychology: Understanding human behaviour in the workplace; John Arnold, Iain Coyne, Ray Randall and Fiona Patterson
This book provides a really good coverage of the key areas theoretical knowledge in occupational psychology and combines this with insights about how these areas are applied in practice. For this reason, it is our recommended text.
Work and Occupational Psychology: Integrating Theory and Practice; Rachel Lewis and Lara Zibarras
Management Consulting: A guide for students; David Biggs
The psychology of behaviour at work; Adrian Furnham (Available online)
Organisational Behaviour: An Introductory Text; Andrzej A. Huczynski and David A. Buchanan
The Psychology of Work and Organisations, 2nd edition; S.A. Woods and M.A. West
As part of the course you'll cover research methods and applied statistics, here are some basic books you may find useful if you want to prepare:
Research methods and statistics in psychology; Hugh Coolican
Discovering statistics using IBM SPSS Statistics; Andy P. Field
Qualitative Research, David Silverman
