Patents and standards

Patents are legal documents which give the owner exclusive rights to profit from an invention or an innovation, protecting it from exploitation by others unless they have the prior agreement of the patent owner.

Standards are consensus agreements drawn up by representative groups who have a particular interest in a system, method, or practice.

These groups might involve manufacturers, users, research organisations, or government departments.
