Studying Effectively

Tutorials

Tutorials are small group or individual meetings with an academic member of staff. They play an important part of many academic programmes and can be central to supporting your study.

Some schools include tutorials as part of the core teaching programme and you might be addressing important ideas and skills that you need to develop in your subject area. In other schools tutorials run alongside the subject teaching and might focus more on individual development and welfare.

In some subject areas (especially the sciences) tutorials can provide an opportunity for a group of students to work collaboratively to test and develop their understanding. Alternatively, tutorials may be the term used to describe a one-to-one meeting with a tutor (more often in the arts), including meetings with personal tutors.

Your School will be able to tell you more about how tutorials work on your course.
