New Publication from the School of Politics and International Relations' Dr Dan Lomas

Book cover for Intelligence, Security and the State: Reviewing the British Intelligence Community

Congratulations to Dr Dan Lomas on the publication of his new book Intelligence, Security and the State: Reviewing the British Intelligence Community (Edinburgh University Press).

Co-edited with Dr Christopher Murphy, the book tells the story of the British intelligence community through newly declassified documents. Each chapter explores specific reviews of the UK intelligence community, providing an overview of how the community today - including the Security Service (MI5), Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) — came into existence, and how it has operated historically,

Speaking about his new publication, Dan said 'There's a view from popular depictions like Bond that the agencies get up to all sorts of mischief and weren't subject to official oversight until the late 80s/early 1990s, but that's not the case. The agencies were all judged on how well they performed by officials behind the scenes, and the documents in the book show what the agencies got up to and give a history of UK intelligence.'

 Congratulations Dan!
