We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to our first cohort of Enhanced Clinical Practitioner apprentices at the University of Nottingham as part of our continued commitment to supporting local healthcare providers.
It’s an exciting time at the university as our first apprentices join our new Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship programme, furthering our support of healthcare skills development within the East Midlands and offering a new pathway for practitioners.
“It’s a real privilege to welcome our first ever Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship cohort. Launching this programme is a significant step in extending our healthcare work-based learning provision, bridging the gap between theory and practice. It equips clinicians with the enhanced skills needed to support local and regional healthcare demands.
Our commitment is to provide an excellent quality of education to our apprentices so that they can develop specialist healthcare skills and enhance clinical practice within their organisation for improved, cohesive care for patients within the East Midlands.”
Supporting our local area
As part of our continued commitment to supporting clinical excellence within the East Midlands, we developed the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship to ensure that all local NHS trusts and healthcare organisations have access to the fully supported training that apprenticeships can offer.
Our aim is to provide a route towards specialist healthcare skills development within the region through both our Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Enhanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship programmes for improved patient care and robust healthcare systems.
Our cohort of Enhanced Clinical Practitioner apprentices will apply the skills they learn on programme within our local community, providing direct benefits to the organisations in which they work and the wider East Midlands region.
"We are thrilled to be extending our partnership with the University of Nottingham, working with them to ensure the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship meets the needs of region's healthcare workforces. This collaboration has been valuable and engaging, and the new programme is an exciting new pathway to ensure our staff can easily access this vital upskilling opportunity.
The Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship aligns perfectly with our strategic objectives—supporting workforce sustainability, enhancing care quality, and improving staff retention. By bridging the gap between general clinical practice and advanced practice, this programme will empower our nurses to take on enhanced clinical roles, ultimately improving patient outcomes and strengthening our workforce in a cost-effective and sustainable way.”
An overview of the programme
Our Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship develops practitioners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to provide a high standard of complex care for patients, using enhanced levels of clinical judgement.
The apprenticeship delivers high-quality staff development with reliable funding for local NHS Trusts and healthcare organisations, supporting the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan 2023 and providing a clear development route for healthcare professionals.
It can be seen as both a destination and a step along the route to Advanced Practice. This presents organisations with a clear development route for their staff, supporting talent pipelines and workforce development plans.
Within the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship programme, the university offers three specialist pathways allowing apprentices to tailor their learning to niche specialist areas or develop through a general pathway.
