Students working in a Recording Studio situated in the Department of Music

The Department of Music enjoys a vibrant research culture. Many of the department's academic staff are internationally recognised scholars in their respective fields.

In the 2021 REF, the Department of Music placed 7th among the Russell Group universities for its research outputs in musicology, composition and performance. More than 80% of our outputs (our publications, compositions and recordings) were rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent', and all our research was rated as having ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ impact.
