Title: Blood, Bugs and MedicalDevices: In Search of Next-Generation Biomaterials

Description:

I am working on high throughput biomaterial discovery using microarray technology to identify novel materials to prevent biofilm and thrombosis (blood clot) formation on blood contacting medical devices (such as vascular catheters). A material microarray allows hundreds of biomaterials formed into a combinatorial library to be presented on a single glass slide for parallel screening against cell and/or protein response, in a high throughput manner. The purpose of this research is to identify blood compatible biomaterial(s) that prevent bacterial adhesion as well as blood clot formation. My work involves looking at bacterial attachment as well as protein adsorption from blood on the surface of a library of hundreds of polymers in a high throughput manner.
