Biography
Dr. Jon Atkinson is an Assistant Professor of Plant Phenomics in the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham. He has expertise in plant physiology and the development/deployment of phenotyping equipment and platforms at the anatomical, organ, whole plant and field scales. As part of his current role, Jon established and manages the MakerSpace - an innovation and training hub designed to solve phenomics problems in plant and food research. He also co-manages the Laser Ablation Tomography facility, a BBSRC ALERT funded platform for high throughput anatomical phenotyping of biological materials.
His research has included working as part of several large multidisciplinary teams bridging plant sciences, computer science, mathematical modelling, and engineering. Example projects include: CPIB - the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology, the Hounsfield Facility for Rhizosphere Research, Designing Future Wheat and the Future Food Beacon of Excellence. He is also a member of the PhenomUK Research Infrastructure delivery team, a UKRI funded scoping project aiming to define and pilot a national distributed phenomics research infrastructure.
