Biography

Jemma Orr is an Assistant Professor, in the Division of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics. Jemma is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) specialising in community nutrition, public health, maternal, infant and early years nutrition. Jemma's teaching practice draws from evidence-based research and practice.

Jemma worked as a public health nutritionist for over 10 years and has been responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of community-based dietary interventions. These have included weight management programmes for men, cook and eat programmes (Eatwell for Life) and programmes for young families and children. Jemma has worked in partnership with a wide range of organisations including Notts County Foodball club, Tescos, local children's centres, schools, local authorities, homeless service providers, foodbanks and various third sector organisations.

As part of her professional practice, Jemma has been involved in developing and delivering evidence-based nutrition training to health professionals and community workers. Jemma has been a Visiting Lecturer on nutrition and public health degrees at Chester University and Sheffield Hallam, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Jemma's Masters dissertation evaluated the effectiveness of the Eatwell for Life programme (cook & eat) in Nottingham, with a particular focus on sustained dietary changes and behaviour as well as the wider impacts of the programme using quantitative and qualitative methods. Eatwell for Life has been used as an example of best practice in Public Health England's Sugar Report for reducing sugar consumption in community settings.

Jemma teaches on various modules across the BSc (Hons) Nutrition, MNutr Nutrition and Dietetics, MSc Nutritional Sciences and MSc Clinical Nutrition programmes. Jemma is module convenor for BIOS2100 - Personal and Professional Skills for Nutritionists - a second-year module on BSc Nutrition supporting students to develop and enhance their employability skills; inspiring and highlighting career pathways innutrition; advocating and promoting the importance of the Association for Nutrition's UKVRN register, scope of practice and code of ethics. She is also module convenor for BIOS4070 - Public Health Nutrition, a postgraduate module covering nutrition across the lifespan, public health nutrition policy and interventions and health promotion. Jemma supervises student research projects on the BSc, MNutr and MSc programmes in the areas of public health nutrition. Jemma's interests lie in enhancing the student experience by developing authentic assessments to enhance employability skills. Jemma's main teaching interests are in public health, professional development. Infant and early years nutrition, community nutrition, sociology, food poverty, evaluation and qualitative research.
