New flexible training opportunities for agri-food professionals from the AgriFood Training Partnership

Description
Today marks the launch of the new AgriFood Training Partnership (AFTP) which builds on the heritage of the three previous Advanced Training Partnerships (ATPs) in agri-food, food and pasture. These three partnerships were all funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) with the primary aim of translating cutting edge research into applied industry expertise with the agri-food sector. Collectively since 2012, the ATPs have delivered short course training and postgraduate qualifications to over 1500 individuals from more than 700 businesses.

Students add flavour to annual food science event

Food scientists from the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham recently flew out to Belfast to attend the Nursten Postgraduate Flavour PhD Symposium, and for some it provided a rare opportunity to present their research work to a leading network of developing scientists from across the UK.

Scientists from the University of Nottingham, England and Tohoku University, Japan have helped to solve a mystery that has fascinated scientists since Charles Darwin - how plant roots sense water and change direction to find it. In a world where water for agriculture is becoming a global challenge this could lead to improved crop varieties which are better at foraging for water.
