Research Topic:Knowledge Sharing of Academic Expatriates in China
Research Details:In my professional years as overseas affairs coordinator at a prestigious Chinese university, I had witnessed the growing needs for global talents in Chinese universities. The number of academic expatriates working in Chinese universities increases rapidly in the recent few years due to Chinese higher education's global ambition underpinned by robust policy and economic support from the central government. One principal purpose of recruiting international staff is to encourage innovation by promoting knowledge sharing between expatriates and local employees. However, despite the well-established theories in knowledge management and expatriate literature, little is known about academic expatriates' knowledge sharing experience, especially in the Chinese context. Through an inductive interpretivist study and using qualitative semi-structured interviews, this study explores academic expatriates' working experiences in China for multi-perspectives and pursue answers for the research question: why do academic expatriates in Chinese universities share (or not share) knowledge with different groups of colleagues in China? This study will advance theoretical understanding on knowledge sharing and expatriates in the higher education field. It will unpack the global talent management practices in the context of China and provide empirical evidence for policymakers who hire academics globally as well as individuals who intend to take international academic assignments in China.
