The Russian Theatre Group recently performed a play entitled Leningrad which was written and directed by students of Russian and Slavonic Studies.
This brilliant Russian play was not only performed – superbly – by students, but also written and directed by students. The play was inspired by Polly McMichael’s Russian Popular Music module, it came complete with a Soviet rock star Sergei Shnurov (played by Nathan Lyne), who belted out a few numbers with real style, but it was a great ensemble cast, including a grumpy babushka who got some of the biggest laughs. It played to packed houses, and also raised £226.75 for the local Teremok Russian supplementary School.
Well done to the Russian teaching staff, especially Laura Todd, who were responsible for getting their students, mostly beginners, to a point of such confident writing and performing in Russian.
