John Gillespie

John Gillespie is an Educational Consultant and Special Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Nottingham.  Until August 2005, he was Senior Research Fellow within the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Lifelong Learning (CDELL).  Prior to joining CDELL he was a member of the Shell Centre for Mathematical Education (now also the Mathematics Assessment and Research Service – MARS) at the University of Nottingham.  He specialises in curriculum development and research in secondary level mathematics education and in generic skills development for school age, post-16 and higher-level students in education and in vocational training within a variety of Sector Skill areas. Currently this includes developments relating to the learning and assessment of ‘functional mathematics’, advising DfES on national and international assessments of adult numeracy and providing advice to the DfES Key Skills Support Programme on the development of higher level generic skills in university and through to employment.

He led the numeracy team for the National Basic Skills Baseline Survey of Adults in England 2002-3 for DfES.  Through CDELL he has played a major role in key skills and other evaluation projects for the DfES and QCA. He is a consultant for the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy.  He led the CDELL team for evaluations of the national Key Skills Support Programme for DfES, was a leading member of the Project team for the HEFCE-funded “Key Skills: Making Connections between HE and Employment” Project (Open University) concerned with generic skills development from university into employment.

He is co-author of the successful National Extension College intermediate level mathematics GCSE distance learning materials and has written a range of mathematics publications for adults for National Extension College.
