Dr Pat Drake
Dr Pat Drake has held posts in Sheffield, the Institute of Education, London, and Sussex. She has led collaborative projects, for example with the BBC, and she was Head of the Sussex School of Education from 2003 - 2006. She currently leads the Professional Doctorate in Education. Pat has served on government working groups to develop teacher education policy, for example the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, and the Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants. She is an elected member of the national executive of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers.
Pat's research interests relate to teaching and learning, and have an applied focus. Her studies include investigating: how subject knowledge for teachers is developed in school-based teacher training; how mathematics and statistics are taught by non-specialists across the university and what supports such university teachers. Her most recent study has explored the experience of a group of secondary teaching assistants undertaking a new degree designed so as to provide a route to qualified mathematics teacher status. A trained mathematician and statistician, Pat has also worked as a qualitative researcher, especially in the field of practitioner research.
