The Engineering Student Experience Fund (ESEF) is open to bids from across the faculty to support events or initiatives that will benefit the student experience and enhance our community within the Faculty of Engineering. Previous bids have brought students, staff and alumni alike together to celebrate the diversity, achievements and skill that we see in the faculty every day.

Wind Turbine Project

Over two years, students have worked on a project to build a wind turbine, then install it on a Derbyshire farm. This project has included over 40 students and support from external business (V3 Power). Students have had the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience working with other engineering disciplines.

“Investing in your ideas is actually the key to turning them into actions. Receiving funding from the ESEF meant that the construction of the wind turbine was viable. I really appreciate the support I've got from the funding and I encourage people to not be afraid on starting up a new idea. Anything is possible!”

Welcome garden party, 2017

On behalf of the Mech Soc Society, Rebecca Fox (a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student) applied to the Student Experience Fund to support a welcome event garden party in September 2017 for new and returning faculty students and staff. The event helped students from all six departments to integrate and get to know one another ahead of the 2017-18 academic session.

“On Friday 29th September 2017, the engineering societies organized the garden party to welcome all new engineering students, to welcome back returning students and all faculty staff! The event was a great success, all of the food went and it was catered for 800 to 1000 people! Many staff from all departments came, many who greatly praised the event for its collaboration and inclusiveness from all scopes of engineering at the University of Nottingham. Thank you again to FESEC and the SEF for all the help and support provided for this event, I am very proud of how it turned out.”

Engineering Ball, 2018

Commonly recognised as of the biggest nights of the academic year for engineering students, the Faculty of Engineering Ball was held in March 2018 at Colwick Hall– which was organised by representatives across faculty departments and student societies. The Engineering Ball 2018 brought together students, lecturers and supporting staff across the faculty to celebrate the end of another successful year at the university. The Ball’s core objective within its application to the SEF was to not only increase attendee numbers but to also improve relations between societies and departments – which can be positively seen within the below testimonial:

“The Engineering Ball 2018 was bigger and better than ever with over 350 guests attending from students, staff and alumni. It was hosted at Colwick Hall, and there were enough people to have the whole outside marquee areas opened up meaning there was room for the entertainment. The event ran very well with collaborations from all the societies. The event was really well received by everyone and the general feedback was they wanted it to go on longer and not end, which having spent so long working on it made me feel very proud. Thank you for all your support this year and this event.”

The Engineering Ball 2018 was highly commended (runner-up) in the Students' Union Society Awards for the “Best Inter-Society Collaboration”.
