Professor Máire ní Fhlathúin takes over as Head of School

The School of English is delighted to announce that our new Head of School, Professor Máire ní Fhlathúin, has officially taken over the role from Professor Svenja Adolphs as of Monday, August 1 2022. We would like to extend our gratitude to Professor Adolphs for all of her exceptional hard work over the last five years, including leading the school through the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor ní Fhlathúin is a scholar and teacher of the literature and culture of British India. She has previously held roles including Head of Literature, 1500 to the present and REF Coordinator for English. Speaking on her appointment to Head of School, Professor ní Fhlathúin said: "I am very pleased to be given this opportunity to serve as Head of School, and I look forward to working alongside dedicated and talented colleagues teaching and researching in every area of English."

We would also like to pass our congratulations on to the following members of staff that have received promotions.

  • Jayne Carroll has been promoted from Associate Professor to Professor of Early English and Name-studies.
  • Sarah Grandage and Daniel Hunt have been promoted to Associate Professor.
  • Jessica Norledge and Rebecca Gregory have been promoted to Assistant Professor
  • Ikuya Aizawa and Vicky Sparrow will be moving from their current Teaching Associate roles to new roles as Assistant Professor

The School of English would also like to welcome the following new and returning members of staff, joining us from September:

  • Anna Blackwell, Assistant Professor in Drama, specialising in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama
  • Kate Kim-McLean, Teaching Associate in Literature, who returns to continue her teaching across a broad range of literary topics from 1500 to the present day
  • James Aitcheson, Teaching Associate in Creative Writing, specialising in fiction
  • Sara Vilar-Lluch, Teaching Associate in Applied Linguistics, specialising in Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics
  • Dana Key, Teaching Associate in Medieval, teaching across Old and Middle English language and literature, and Old Norse texts in translation
