Every week everyone will act; each week, pairs of students will be given directing tasks (a little bit like you've had on Stan to CP with the directing tasks).
In the second half of the module, you will take over the majority of the process as a group, to form something akin to a small theatre company – to create, rehearse and produce a short piece of work (around 30mins) that you will perform to an invited audience at the end of the module. You will be the performers as well as carrying out all the production roles – you will choose two directors, a couple of writers, a team to do costume, set, lighting and sound, and so on, as well as acting.
Students work as a group with the common goal of producing a piece of work that shows off what they can do. The time is spent in workshops/rehearsals, designing the set, making costumes, helping to fashion the script, publicizing the show, and so on. rather than spending time alone writing essays in the library.
Students take on all the production roles: director, production manager, writer, choreographer, set and costume designer, make-up designer, stage manager, publicity manager.
Students develop a range of skills, both theatrical skills and ones that are applicable to life and work more generally:
-
Theatre-focussed skills that come to the fore include artistic, musical, make-up and costume, set, lighting, choreography, and marketing the show.
-
And more broadly, skills related to teamwork, project management, small scale budget management, motivating a team/individuals to achieve their best, diplomacy, self-reliance, self-confidence, creative problem solving and so on
