Awards categories and criteria
There are nine awards available to recognise outstanding knowledge exchange activities amongst academic colleagues across all three campuses of the University of Nottingham.
All shortlisted entrants will be invited to attend the awards dinner on the evening of Thursday 22 November 2018 at the East Midlands Conference Centre.

The following awards categories are open for application:
Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards
Applicants are invited to submit entries which demonstrate collaborations that have made a significant impact or has the potential to create significant impact, on a specific business, or a group of businesses in one or more industrial sectors. Alternatively, entries may focus on work which has had a major impact on society or a specific group of the public, or on public policy.
There will be one award per faculty from a shortlist of three:
- Faculty of Arts
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Medicine and Health Science
- Faculty of Science
- Faculty of Social Sciences

The panel of judges will be looking for entries which demonstrate how a project has met each aspect of the criteria. The entries will be short-listed based on the following criteria:
- Importance of the project in its sector - how transformational has the impact been to date? OR what is the potential of the impact?
- Potential of the project in its sector - how differentiated is the project between what has been achieved to date and what further impact the project may achieve in the future?
- Impact of beneficiaries - how broad and deep is the likely influence/effect on beneficiaries?
- Uniqueness - how extraordinary is the success of this project? What makes it different? How does it stand out from other Knowledge Transfer activities? Was there something unusual about the approach and results achieved?
- Benefit to the faculty, school or division - how has the project benefited the University strategically, financially and/or reputationally?
Media awards
These Media Awards celebrate academics based on all campuses who have successfully promoted their work through the media. They must be nominated by their school, faculty or a media relations manager. Judges of this category will select one winner from a shortlist of three for each award, namely:
- Research story of the year - this award is for the individual or team that has made the biggest impact and achieved coverage about a piece of their research by working with broadcast, print and/or online media.
- Expert commentator of the year - this award is for the individual or team that has made the biggest impact and achieved ongoing coverage through commentary and analysis in broadcast, print and/or online media.
We invite nominations made by a senior member of staff at faculty or school level or by a member of the Media Relations team. Please liaise with the Media Relations team before submitting your nomination.

The panel of judges will be looking for entries which demonstrate how the academic and/or team has met each aspect of the criteria. The entries will be shortlisted based on the following criteria:
- Coverage – the extent of news coverage across the media at local, national and international level.
- Outcome of media coverage – the impact media coverage has had on the real world and your research.
- Proactive media work – the extent to which you and/or team have actively promoted your work in the media.
- Reactive media work – extent to which you have and/or team responded to media enquiries.
- Benefit to the faculty, school or division - how has the project benefited the University strategically, financially and/or reputationally?

Policy impact award
This award recognises outstanding academics based on all campuses whose research findings and communications have influenced the formation or implementation of public policy. This may be through working with politicians, civil servants or any other type of policymakers or influencers at any geographical location.
We invite both self nominations and nominations made by a senior member of staff at faculty or school level or by a professional services staff member.

Entries must demonstrate how the academic and/or team has met each aspect of the criteria. Applications will be judged against the following core criteria:
- Evidence that the research findings have been taken up and used by policymakers.
- Lasting/emerging relationships with policymakers who facilitated policy impact, or as a result of the policy impact achieved.
- Benefit to the faculty/school/department/institute from a strategic, financial and/or reputational point of view.

Vice Chancellor's Award for Knowledge Exchange
This award recognises an academic who, over the course of their career, can clearly evidence a sustained engagement in knowledge exchange for the benefit of industry and commerce and/or society.
Entrants for this award can be nominated by others, or may choose to self-nominate via the entry form online.
There will be one award winner for this category.

The panel of judges will be looking for evidence of:
- Importance of the work - how transformational has the impact been of the body of work of the nominated candidate. Please provide evidence where possible.
- Potential impact of work – what is the potential future impact on business or society of the nominated candidate’s work? What has been achieved to date and what further impact might the project achieve in the future?
- Impact on beneficiaries – how broad and deep is the impact/or likely impact of the applicant’s work on beneficiaries?
- Uniqueness - how extraordinary is the success of the applicant's work? How does his/her work stand out from other knowledge exchange activities?
- Benefit to the Faculty, School or Division - how has the work of the applicant benefited the University strategically, financially and/or reputationally?
Information on the judging panels
Each Faculty will convene a judging panel for the awards chaired by the relevant faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor's Knowledge Exchange Award will be judged by a panel chaired by Professor Dame Jessica Corner.
The Media Awards will be longlisted by faculties and a final shortlist of three will be selected by a panel from the External Relations team.
