Exploring how people and movements
interact with urban spaces

How would you explain your research?

My research explores the relationships between migrants and social/labour movements, and the ways these groups interact with urban spaces. So far my research has been predominantly based in Latin America, but I will be exploring comparative work with the UK in the future.

What inspired you to pursue this area?

I have been involved with political activism for a long time and have always been inspired by Latin American social movements, so a chance to combine the two seemed too good to pass up! The focus on migration comes from previous work I carried out in Costa Rica with migrant domestic labour.

How will your research affect the average person?

My hope is that my research can be used by organisations and movements who are working closely with migrants, as well as trade unions who seek to improve conditions for everyone.

How does your research influence your teaching?

Like my research, I ensure that my teaching is politically engaged and participatory. I always try to use contemporary case studies to support more complex theoretical ideas.

What's been the greatest moment of your career so far?

Getting to live in Buenos Aires for most of a year and carry out research. It's an experience I will never forget.

What's the biggest challenge in your field?

Exploring migration in a period of rising xenophobia and discrimination.

What advice would you give to someone considering an undergraduate degree in geography?

Engage with all different aspects of the subject, as often the things you think you don't like (or have never heard of) turn out to be those you become most interested in.
