Understanding FGM

3. What is FGM?

In order to provide appropriate care for those who have experienced FGM, we must understand what we mean by this term. In fact, the term Female Genital Mutilation covers a range of types of practices usually carried out between infancy and 15 years of age but also occurring in older women. The range of practices and differences in age where it occurs can lead to confusion and a lack of understanding. In addition, it is described differently by different cultures and a whole set of language has evolved around it.

Listen to the 3 clips provided here and then attempt the reflective activity at that follows.
