Understanding FGM

4. Types of FGM

Type 1 is partial or total removal of the clitoris, which is known as Clitoridectomy.

Type 2 involves partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora with or without excision of the labia majora. This is known as Excision.

Type 3 is a narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal by cutting and repositioning the labia with or without removal of the clitoris, which is described as Infibulation.

There are also other practises that are included in the official FGM definition, such as: pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterising the genital area. These are grouped together as Type 4.
