Following assessment, it is important to explicitly consider and discuss treatment options, including all of those that would have been offered to a cognitively intact person. A decision-making process should be used to decide which are the most appropriate.
In considering treatment options, you must take account of what is possible, and what is wanted, or what would have been wanted if the person with dementia could tell you. For more information on decision making see the Dementia and decision making module in this series.
Including carers in the decision making process, and assessing their needs is essential and a requirement of the Care Act 2015.
For more information on decision making see the Dementia and Cognitive Loss RLO.
