Previous findings

There has been little research into the care of patients with dementia dying on acute hospital wards. However, findings from previous studies have suggested that patients with dementia may receive different, and possibly worse, care compared to other patients.

Particular concerns have focused on the adequacy of pain relief and access to palliative care for patients dying with dementia.

However, the CFFOP study found no difference in the observed or reported care of patients dying on the wards, regardless of whether or not they had dementia.

The need to improve the experience of dying in hospital applies for all patients and their carers.
