Supporting parents whose infants are at greater risk of childhood overweight
1. Introduction
BabyGRO part 1 aimed to help you understand why early identification of overweight risk is important and to increase your knowledge of specific risk factors for a child becoming overweight, those that can be identified in the child's first year of life.
It also introduced you to the Infant Risk of Overweight Checklist (IROC) and showed you how this can be used in practice to identify infants at high risk of becoming overweight children. We recommend that an IROC assessment is undertaken from infant age 3-4 months. However, the IROC tool can be used on infants up to 1 year of age in conjunction with professional assessment of parental* support needs, particularly for infants who are exclusively breast fed.
BabyGRO part 2 introduces some strategies that you might use with parents to help to prevent infants identified as being high risk for becoming overweight as children.
If you would like to explore further the evidence behind BabyGRO there is a list of resources at the end of the training.
*Parents refers to carers, parents or legal guardians with responsibility for an infant or child.
